Character Information
Name: Dr. Jonathan Crane, aka Scarecrow
Fandom: Batman universe (mainly ‘Batman Begins’ movie)
Age: 29
Gender: Male
Occupation: Therapist
Personality: Dr. Crane is cunning and intelligent, and quite arrogant as well (perhaps even a little vain). He's curious but sadistic in discovering things that he wants to know, usually something to do with the human psyche. It's a good idea to run if he asks 'What's on your mind?'. His weapon is fear, and there's nothing he loves more than instilling absolute terror in people. He has a taste for the theatrical and he’s pretty much obsessed with fear, so much that he gave his own fear a name, ‘Scarecrow’.
It created an alternate personality, a whole different person. Jonathan is cold, calculating and in complete control over his emotions, while the Scarecrow is a wild beast, that wants nothing more than make people tremble in fear before him. Jonathan is happy to oblige, though when dealing with colleagues, he will keep his other side at bay, seeing as it would be a pity if the good doctor became a patient himself. Thus he keeps his multiple personality ‘problem’ a strict secret. Well, problem, neither of them actually see a problem.
History: Dr. Crane is a brilliant psychiatrist, specialised in the field of psychopharmacology. He aided in developing new drugs to administer to psychiatric patients to keep them calm and sedated, or to keep their symptoms suppressed. He worked in a few renowned hospitals so far, though there were a few odd rumours about him testing new drugs upon patients. There was never any tangible proof of these experiments however. Eventually he applied to join the staff at this mental institute. This is what most people know about Jonathan Crane.
His father was a well-known psychiatrist as well, but since a young age, Jonathan was treated by the man as one of his patients. He was often abusive when the young boy failed in some way or another, and the boy learned quickly what fear was. He was scared of his father and scared of the bullies in school who saw him as ‘girly’ and weird. The more he was beaten up, the more his fear and anger gained a life of its own. It was in college when a particular hard beating made Jonathan snap, and Scarecrow lashed out. He killed his would-be assailant by knocking him senseless against the wall, then dragging him into the chemistry lab and playing ‘what does this drink do?’, ending up with quite an interesting cocktail before the victim died eventually.
He went into medical school, and during his course he picked up plenty of chemistry units. After he graduated, he paid his old man a visit. During this visit, his father committed an inexplicable suicide, leaving a rather plain suicide note, and killed himself by an apparent drug overdose. Plenty of sleeping pills and painkillers were found in his cupboards, under which things like vicodin and valium. However, there was a strange substance found in his lungs, and before dying, his heart had been under great stress, but no one understood what this meant.
It was actually during this time that Crane had his first job as a psychiatrist in a mental institution, by the name of Arkham asylum, and under the cover of therapy, he did experiments with patients in developing an aerosol fear toxin. His father was one of his favourite guinea pigs, even though it only lasted shortly before the man died. This toxin is a hallocinogenic drug which makes people believe their deepest fears have come to life (enhanced by the mask Scarecrow often wears, which also doubles as a gas mask so he wouldn't be affected by the gas). He has developed an antidote as well, for emergency cases, but is reluctant to use it upon victims, only if there is some risk of being discovered by authorities.
He was happy to find this place, and applied to become a member of staff. Now he’s interested in further refining his fear-inducing drug, but is also open to new techniques, and not just chemical ones, though that is his interest.
Symptoms: Sadistic Personality Disorder: Both sides of him are sadistic, cruel people, but Scarecrow more so than Crane. Scarecrow revels in it, Jonathan denies it, claiming he only aims to aid his patients. So despite dealing pain or suffering, he will stay emotionless and cold about it.
You could call his odd other personality a case of dissociative identity disorder, but he doesn’t display the usual amnesia associated with the disease. He seems aware of the ‘other person’ within him, but it appears they act like ‘roommates’ or some kind of symbiotic relationship. Crane likes observing Scarecrow’s effect on people, and Scarecrow likes to hide behind the mask of a respectable doctor, which allows him easy access to vict-, er, patients. Though when provoked or threatened, the change to Scarecrow usually happens involuntarily.
